Chunky Move recognises there is a gap in the career trajectory for mid-career dance artists wishing to step into positions of artistic leadership. Currently there are very few structured opportunities for individual artists to learn the skills of company management and artistic directorship. The role of Artistic Associate is designed to bridge that gap and provide an opportunity to gain insights into running a successful dance company.
With the generous support of the Besen Family Foundation, Chunky Move is offering a paid, part-time residency starting in the first half of 2018 that will provide an Artistic Associate the opportunity to gain experience and skills to prepare them for future artistic leadership roles.
The Artistic Associate will be offered:
- Access to studio space during the residency to work on personal choreographic research;
- Mentorship by the Artistic Director, Executive Director and other staff to support and help develop artistic leadership, producing and general management skills.
- A salary of $50,000 pro rata based on a part-time contract.
The successful applicant must be able to commit to starting the residency in the first half of 2018 (exact dates and scheduling to be negotiated).

ABOUT THE PROGRAM
Initiated in 2016, The Artistic Associate program is a flexible professional development program for a mid-career artist covering areas of company management and artistic leadership.
Tara Jade Samaya was selected as Chunky Move’s inaugural 2016 Artistic Associate and spent a total of 10 weeks (part-time) working closely with Chunky Move’s Artistic Director and Choreographer Anouk van Dijk. During Tara’s time as Artistic Associate she worked with the full management team to gain greater insight into the complexities and demands of running a dance company. She also worked alongside Artistic Director Anouk van Dijk in the development of new works (L U C I D and ANTI—GRAVITY), had access to studio time for her own research and development, and explored new avenues to expand the Company’s public programs.
Tara has worked under the directorship of Anouk van Djik at Chunky Move since 2012 performing in several works and touring with the Company. She has also previously performed with Australian Dance Theatre. Under the collective Ubuntu Samaya, Tara and Pippa Samaya are developing their own multidisciplinary art practice. Our inaugural Artistic Associate program was supported by Jane Badler-Hains.
