Melbourne’s leading contemporary dance company offers a range of public classes for participants ages 18+ in Contemporary. From complete beginner to advanced levels, all classes are taught by professional dancers currently working within the industry and provide a supportive and fun learning environment.
A great way to unwind, work out and improve flexibility and strength, Chunky Move public dance classes are taught in our purpose built, state-of-the-art dance studios, conveniently located in the heart of Melbourne’s arts precinct, a short stroll from the Melbourne CBD.
If you’ve never danced, it’s been a while, or you’re simply looking to step up to the next level within a professional environment, Chunky Move public dance classes have an option to cater for every dancer.

To participate in a class all you need to do is arrive on the day. There is no need to register beforehand. We recommend participants arrive 15-10 minutes before class to allow enough time to pay at reception.
Classes are scheduled every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday nights from 6.30 to 8pm, Wednesday and Thursday mornings from 7:15 to 8:15 and Saturday mornings from 10 to 11.30am and 12pm to 1.30pm. To receive our monthly class timetable direct to your inbox, sign up here.
Contemporary dance borrows from jazz, ballet, funk, social dance styles and many modern dance styles of the 20th century. Contemporary dance encourages natural, spontaneous movement and personal interpretation. It focuses on self-expression, awareness of space and body movement, use of body weight, efficiency of muscle use and safe body alignment. Classes start with a comprehensive warm-up and gradually build up to more elaborate dance routines.
Chunky Move Contemporary yoga is led by experienced Chunky Move teachers—beginning with a stimulating Vinyasa warm up, leading into contemporary dance pathways and concluding with a dance phrase. It focuses on balancing the energy of body and mind to gain strength, flexibility and balance both on and off the yoga mat.
Complete beginner level: suitable for participants with no prior experience.
Beginner level: suitable for all participants with little to no prior experience.
Intermediate level: suitable for those with previous dance experience who are looking to further technical skills.
What to wear: non-restrictive track style pants or tight leggings, t-shirt or sports top.
Location: we are located on the corner of Sturt and Grant streets, next door to the Malthouse Theatre. Enter from the Malthouse side of the building. There is a buzzer on the wall to the left of the door.
Facilities: female and male change rooms/showers/toilets along the corridor upstairs. Special access change room, showers and toilets available.
Age: all dance participants must be 18+ years old
