Paea is a dancer, performer, writer, teacher and choreographer based in Melbourne. Her practice is based in somatic research, improvisation and iyengar yoga teachings and physical philosophies. It is fed by a combination of working with choreographers, imagining and producing her own works, teaching and daily writing practice.
Paea has worked with Chunky Move, Australian Dance Theatre, Perth Theatre Co, Baryana Popov (Melbourne), PVC in Germany and for Eastman (Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui) in Belgium. She has been funded to create her own work and has performed and taught nationally and internationally.
Paea has made works for WAAPA, independent dance seasons (STRUT, Lucky Trimmer, IOU Sydney) for LINK dance co, Company Loaded among others. She has cultivated collaborative projects such as the solos project (2004 – 2006) and the economy of loss (2011) with Sam Fox and Jo Pollitt, and most recently made a site specific work the lines of birds with Melbourne experimental musicians Madeleine Flynn and Tim Humphrey as part of the Chunky Move Next Move season. She has been collaborating for six years with Perth based improviser and writer Jo Pollitt – making Quiet beast (2012), Amplified beast (2013), Beast 3 (2014), Divided (2013) and the distance project (2009). She was the recipient of an Asialink Grant in 2011, spending three months with dancers in Cambodia creating thin white line, and part of the re-performance of Luminosity by Marina Abramovic (Kaldor Public Art projects Sydney 2013). Paea has taught for a range of beginners, professionals and even prison inmates and has recently given birth to a baby boy.
She trained at Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA @ ECU) in Perth, Australia, gaining her Bachelor of Arts in Dance and then Honours degree (1999 and 2001).
Class with Paea
My beginners/intermediate class incorporates elements of internal focus, breath, basic floor work, improvising and phrases. The aim is to invest in your body ‘as it is’ now and to work toward opening possibilities for moving with more rigour, skill and attention with each week. I have a love of a huge range of music and rhythm so this is an important element of my teaching and your consequent joy. I want to create a space that is welcoming and challenging as we all learn about the body in stillness and in motion, and by the end of class to feel as though you have had a really great experience of moving through space to some great tunes.
