James Batchelor is an award-winning choreographer and performer based in Canberra and Melbourne. He made his debut with Chunky Move in AORTA (2013), a Next Move production by Stephanie Lake.
His works combine movement and visual arts, using performance as a tool to inspire critical thought and reflection on the contemporary world. As a performer, he has worked with choreographers and companies including Antony Hamilton, Stephanie Lake, Sue Healey, Prue Lang, Chunky Move and Tasdance. He was the 2014 Dancehouse Housemate resident, developing the performance installation ISLAND, which won a Green Room Award for Concept and Realisation and a Canberra Critics Circle Award (Dance). He was a commissioned artist for the inaugural Keir Choreographic Award, and is currently developing a new work METASYSTEMS which is touring Australia, Thailand, France, Italy and China in 2015.
James trained in Canberra with the QL2 Quantum Leap Ensemble and later in Melbourne as a graduate of the Victorian College of the Arts.
James’s class deals with expansive and multidimensional movement ideas. The exercises have a particular focus on navigating weight, balance and coordination to find both control and freedom.
